The Masters Program in the Humanities



The Department of Interdisciplinary Humanities offers two Master of Arts (MA) tracks:

- The Junior College Instructors Program, offered in conjunction with the College of Education, is designed primarily for the student whose immediate professional objective is teaching in a two-year college.

- The Interdisciplinary Program in the Humanities and the Arts provides a graduate Liberal Studies degree program in the humanities and the arts.

All graduate students are required to make an appointment with the director of the program to approve course work for the following term. Please review all college-wide requirements summarized in the "College of Arts and Sciences" chapter in the Graduate Bulletin.


The Junior College Instructors Program

This is a thirty-six (36)-semester hour non-thesis program.

Requirements For Admission:
(a) An undergraduate major in one of the humanities area departments;
(b) A Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 1000
(c) A minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all work attempted as an upper-division student working for a baccalaureate degree, and
(d) Three (3) letters of recommendation.

Requirements For the Degree:
(a) Nine (9) semester hours minimum in professional education courses EDH 5054, 5305, and 5306;
(b) Nine (9) semester hours in HUM 5227, 5245, and 5253;
(c) Nine (9) semester hours minimum in the department of the undergraduate major; (d) Nine (9) semester hours in a cluster of courses from at least two other departments in the humanities area, focusing on one cultural period;
(e) Certification of competency in reading a foreign or classical language;
(f) A comprehensive examination, and
(g) An internship.


The Interdisciplinary Program in the Humanities and the Arts

This is a thirty-three (33)-semester hour non-thesis program.

Requirements For Admission:
(a) An undergraduate major in one of the humanities area departments;
(b) A Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 1000;
(c) A minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all work attempted as an upper-division student working for a baccalaureate degree, and
(d) Three (3) letters of recommendation.

Requirements For the Degree:
(a) Nine (9) semester hours in HUM 5227, 5245, and 5253;
(b) Twelve (12) semester hours of courses focusing on a specific cultural period or theme;
(c) Twelve (12) semester hours of HUM 6939r or other appropriate courses, as follows:

The Seminars/courses must focus on at least one each from the following categories:

LIT - Literary analysis, criticism, history or appreciation

When appropriate HUM 6939r seminars are not offered one of the following courses may be selected: Studies in Critical Theory (ENG 5049r); Studies in Film (ENG 5138r); Studies in Fiction (LIT 5017r); Studies in Poetry (LIT 5038r); Studies in Drama (LIT 5047r).

ART - Analogous aspects of art history

When appropriate HUM 6939r seminars are not offered any graduate course in art history that is open to non-majors can be substituted.

MUS - Analogous aspects of music

When appropriate HUM 6939r seminars are not offered one of the following courses may be selected: Music: MUH 5380, Music in the Humanities, or any graduate level music course that is open to non-majors.

(d) Certification of competency in reading a foreign or classical language, and
(e) A comprehensive examination.

The master's degree requirements are fulfilled through regular course work. On an extremely rare occasion, relating to emergency circumstances, the director of the program may approve a directed individual study (DIS) in lieu of regular course work.
